Eternal Perspective
Children want what they want and they want it now because they have no concept of the future. They only know the here and now. But God wants is to look into the future. He told the people of Israel while they were in exile:
“Do not be afraid, Jacob my servant; do not be dismayed, Israel. I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and security, and no one will make him afraid.
Jeremiah 46:27
Even while Israel was in exile God told them to take the long view. Verse 27 says Jacob will again have peace and security. Even though the situation was bad God wanted them to look towards the future at a time when security and peace would return to Israel. We must all have an eternal perspective on life in order to get rid of fear and have peace in our hearts.
Paul reminds us of this eternal mindset:
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-4
